Tourist Attractions in Alicante

Alicante has quite a compact city centre, with many worthy tourist attractions within a short distance of each other, particularly around the historical part of Alicante called the "Barrio". There are approximately 15 km of beautiful sandy beaches including the San Juan Beach, which is connected to the main harbour area in Alicante by a modern Tram service as well as a regular bus service.

For those who enjoy walking, the "Esplanada" is a well kept seafront promenade, with superb views and lined with palm trees. Other popular tourist attractions in Alicante include the lively marina area, regular performances at Alicante's Theatre, shopping around the "Plaza del Puerto Viejo", and a nightlife for people of all ages .

The city's marina area is a particularly lively and a vibrant part of Alicante and is home to many popular tourist attractions. Many of the best restaurants and bars can be found along the waterfront, serving fresh seafood dishes. The Alicante marina also often features boat hire and pleasure trips around the harbour and to the local island of Tabarca.

Alicante's Theatre offers an extensive calendar of events with concerts, operas, ballet and jazz performances. The shows are varied and extremely popular for both local residents and tourists, especially during the high season.

You can visit most of these attractions in Alicante throughout the year, although I would avoid August and September, unless you really enjoys temperatures of around 35/40 degrees.

Beaches in Alicante

In the heart of the city of Alicante at the base of the "Monte Benacantil" you will find the 900 metre stretch of golden sandy beach known as the "Playa del Postiguet". It is in a easily accessible and unique with lines of palm trees highlighting the beautiful esplanade, full of bars and restaurants. It has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for cleanliness and is used all year round due to the mild winter climate in Alicante, but is particularly busy on Sundays during the summer months.

Take a short stroll along the shoreline to the smaller beach called the "Playa del Coco", where the local fishermen used to land their catches. There is still a small harbour here with some restaurants and cafes where you can sit back and take in the panoramic sea views.

To the north of the Alicante is situated a beach called "Playa de la Albufereta" which takes its name from the small coastal lake that used to be here with a harbour that served the Roman village of Lucentum. This beach leads on to the Playa de la Almadraba which is a small sandy beach and is the perfect place for water sports enthusiasts or swimmers.

The "Cabo de las Huertas" beach is ideal for those who want to explore a more rugged coastline with picturesque coves that are difficult to access, just adding to it's remoteness. If you want to develop that all over tan then the two nudist coves of "Cala Palmera" and "Cala Cantelalares" are great places for you, but make sure you use a high factor sun screen.

The "Playa San Juan" beach and the "El Campello" beach are a bit further north along the coast (about 25 minutes from the city). El Campello is a lovely town with bars and restaurants spilling out on to a lovely promenade that runs alongside a stretch of golden sands. Both have gently sloping shores that are perfectly safe for children and a marina where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch.

If you are considering a short break or holiday in the region of Alicante, you can find great accommodation on the Alicante Golf course resort. The location is ideal for easy access to all of the beaches in Alicante and if you fancy a round golf, then it's just a 2 minute walk to the Alicante Golf clubhouse.

A -Z Golf courses in Alicante

Alenda Golf Club
The Alenda Golf Club is situated very close to the Sierra de las Aguilas mountains and the sea, and this location means it has a pleasant climate. It is an 18-hole course, with a gentle, undulating and varied round. It is very entertaining for players of all levels, and you will really need to use all of your clubs. It’s quite a quick round, as all of the holes are linked together and the walks from green to tee are short.

Alicante Golf
Situated at Playa de San Juan, very near to Alicante, this modern, balanced course and was designed by Severiano Ballesteros. The course has a par of 72, with six par-3s, six par-4s and six par-5s. The main feature of the course is the vast abundance of water, which makes for quite a tricky round.

Campo de Golf Villamartín
The course is not too long, and is well adapted to the natural surroundings and terrain. It is a varied course, although the fact that it is located in the lowest part of a valley means it is not very undulating.

There is Mediterranean vegetation in abundance as well as thick woods, although they rarely come into play. The greens are not too small and each hole is completely different. The difficulty of this course lies in having to avoid a natural precipice and several water hazards on some holes.

Campo de Golf Las Ramblas de Orihuela
This 18-holer is on mountainous ground which makes the course very interesting for players who like to take a few risks. As it is very mountainous, it calls for difficult strokes. It is worth mentioning the many trees that surround the course, and the water hazards. There are slopes are all along the course and although some of them are very difficult, they make the game more attractive and interesting.

Orihuela 03189 Alicante Tel. 96 532 20 11 Fax 96 532 21 59

Club de Golf Don Cayo
The Don Cayo golf club was founded in 1974 by Don Luis Campomanes Asumendi as part of the "El Aramo" residential development project, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Bernia mountain range. It is located in the municipal limits of Altea, a Mediterranean village famous for the beauty of its historic quarter and the distinctive natural light.

With a round of 3,078 metres from the white tees, extremely difficult holes - such as the 5th, a 580-metre par-5, or the 6th, a slightly uphill 227-metre par-3 – alternate with recovery holes which also require accuracy if you want to land the ball on the fairway. Players tend to prefer the 3rd, with its views of the sea, and the 7th from where you can make out the mountains surrounding the Marina Baixa.

The Ifach golf course is situated in Moraira (Benissa) on a country estate with the best views in the Autonomous Region of Valencia. It has a round of nine holes (6 par-3’s and 3 par-4’s) and even though the holes are short, the terrain and the narrow fairways make them quite difficult and technical.
Urb. San Jaime - Ctra. Moraira-Calpe, km. 3 Apartado 28 Benissa 03720 Alicante Tel. 96 649 71 14 Fax 96 649 71 14

Club de Golf Javea
Situated 90 kilometres from Alicante on the way to Valencia, and sheltered from the wind by Cape San Antonio, the course has a perfect micro climate all the year round, and is located in a wonderful natural setting, surrounded by pine woods. The round is very attractive, with gentle slopes, excellently maintained greens, and wide fairways flanked by pine trees and orange trees.

Javea 03730 Alicante Tel. 96 579 25 84 Fax 96 646 05 54

Club de Golf La Sella
Located on the slopes of a mountain, the La Sella Golf Club is not a particularly tiring course. It lies next to Montgó natural park, and is surrounded by Mediterranean woodland and hills. Pine trees, orange trees, olives and almonds add colour to the course and, although they are pretty to look at, will cause big problems for less accurate players.

The course has 18 holes and a par of 72. It is varied and thought provoking, and moderate in length and, if you know how to use all of your clubs, you will be able to get a good result. The design of the courses means it is suitable for players of all levels, with the difficulty apparent at the tees. The designer, with the expert help of José María Olazábal, designed the course in such a way that if you miss the green, you will need all the virtuosity of the Spanish Champion to save the par.

Ctra. La Xara - Jesús Pobre Jesus Pobre 03749 Alicante Tel. 96 645 42 52 Fax 96 645 42 01

Golf & Country Club La Marquesa
Situated 58 kilometres from Alicante on the N-332. It is located in a flat valley between mountains, and the layout of the round alternates between long holes and short ones. It is not excessively difficult and so players of all levels will enjoy it. The most difficult factor lies in the characteristic layout of the greens, with their attractive and complicated slopes.
Avda Justo Quesada s/n Apartado 8 Rojales 03170 Alicante Tel. 96 671 41 82 Fax 96 671 42 67

Real Club de Golf Campoamor
The Real Club de Golf Campoamor, built on a former country estate and surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside, was designed to take advantage of the unusual terrain of the area.
Its 18 holes run through two connected valleys surrounded by low, gently undulating ridges which protect it from the wind and create a special microclimate which allows people to play golf all the year round.

Museums in Alicante

While you stay in Alicante I hope you find time to see a couple of the historic museums. You will find all the information translated into English and will discover a great deal about the history of Alicante. Here are just a few of the surrounding museums in Alicante that you may wish to view.

Casa Museo La Asegurada ("Casa de la Asegurada" Museum)
The Museum sits at the foot of the castle of Santa Barbara, and exhibits important works by both 20th-century Spanish and foreign artists.

The building which houses the Museum was originally used as a granary, then as a prison, school,Library and currently, the home to one of the most interesting collections of 20th-century art.

The collection on the whole was a donated by the artist Eusebio Sempere to the city of Alicante and the collection is composed of works by Spanish creators from the 1950's, such as Chillida, Millares, Mompo, Saura, Tàpies and Zobel. The collection was later completed with works by Salvador Dali, Picasso, Juan Gris and the so-called "Equipo Crónica". On the second floor you can contemplate works by foreign artists as important as Braque, Vasarely, Kandinsky and Max Ernst.

Church of San Pedro
Rebuilt after an earthquake, the Church of San Juan unites baroque features with the beginnings of what would become neoclassicism.

It is on the site of a mosque which was converted into a church. It was built in the 15th century although the current temple dates back to the 19th century. This new temple was built according to the baroque style in the course of transition to the Neoclassical. The highlight of its artistic heritage are the figures by Alonso Cano and Salzillo and a fresco which is found in the High Altar that represents the Dogma of the Immaculate Virgin.
