If you are considering the possibility of working in Alicante, then there are quite a few possibilities in a whole range of different jobs that might very well be that sort of work you would be interested in.

As an EC citizen, you can either work as self employed or even as an employee, whereby the employer would have to pay your national insurance, income tax and holiday pay. It's June again and yes the Alicante fiestas called the Hogeuras are back again, bigger better and ready to be burnt down on the 24th June. During the week running up people come and visit Alicante, taking a stroll round the city to appreciate the hard work put in to making these huge paper mache effigies that tend to reflect what is going on in the current Spanish and International communities.

This years popular themes were the United States, Swine Flue, and climate change. Prizes are given to the best Hogueras and the local Alicantinos really do take this fiesta seriously, which represents the changing of seasons although I dread to think if only paper mache effigies were always what were actually burnt. The burning always takes place at midnight on the 24th and kicks off at the Town Hall square, which is literally packed with thousands of people shouting and singing. It is traditional to sing insulting chants at the fireman who in turn hose down the over heated crowd.

The party has started and people move round Alicante, drink in hand and enjoy other burnings. Other popular Hogueras include some by the harbor and others in a district of Alicante called Carolinas. This is all good traditional fiesta fun and tourists will always have the most wonderful experience when partying out in Alicante on San Juan night.

I would recommend staying in a hotel or hostel for the week, although if you are staying close by the Tram via has an all night service. During the week proceeding the 24th, there are firework displays down on the Alicante beach, where once again thousands of people gather to watch some quite spectacular fireworks that light up the whole sky and can be heard from Benidorm.

The average day time temperature in June is about 30º and nighttime between 15 and 20º, so you can enjoy the beach in the morning ,the fiestas in the afternoon after the siesta and then just party all night long. The local bands start to parade around the streets at 7 in the morning so now you know why I mentioned the siesta.

I have lived in the Alicante region of Spain for 22 years and I think it's time I should share my positive experiences with anyone who is contemplating living in Spain, as there really are so many benefits which I will be defining as the best 10 reasons why you should live in Alicante Golf.

1) The sunshine and mild Winter climate probably heads the list, with a minimum temperature of 5º in Winter and real scorcher days in the Summer reaching up to 40º. In the Winter, if the sun is out you can be out, it's as simple as that and you will save a lot too on heating bills. The best of the weather though is definitely in the Autumn and Spring, with an average temperature of 20 to 25º, even allowing you to spend time at the beach in the Playa San Juan or to enjoy a memorable day on the Alicante Golf course in perfect conditions.

2) Alicante Golf then as the name suggests is not only the nicest residential area of Alicante, but also beholds a fantastic par 72 golf course that was designed by Seve Ballesteros on the late 90s. Finally in August, each residential community have a party whereby all the neighbors spend an evening together drinking and dancing the night away, so it can get a bit noisy in August.

You will find literally thousands of people partying in Alicante every weekend all year round. There are a variety of bars and clubs for all ages including several gay bars and clubs and all music tastes are catered for.

On a typical Saturday night out, you will find pockets of young people drinking on the streets all over Alicante, and the most spectacular area is the Barrio, where you find lines of bars with outdoor seating. The atmosphere is unreal, everybody having fun and laughing, and the small bars just packed with people dancing. Unfortunately this all comes to an end a about 3 in the morning, when the local police move in and make sure that everybody leaves the area in an orderly fashion.

Almost everyone then heads down to the harbour area where there are several large pubs with plenty of room for dancing as well as exterior seating looking onto the sea. At the very end of the Alicante Postiguet beach you will find a very relaxing "Chill Out" open air pub, right by the sea. There is a Tram stop within 200 metres of the pub and you normally find the people that frequent "Isla Marina" are 25+ and the Chill out atmosphere allows you to even lie down and chat, and it really is a memorable night out to be repeated.

Traditionally in the summer, Alicante closed down for nightlife and everybody headed up to the Playa San Juan, but that is not the case any more. Even though the Playa San Juan does still have a loyal fan club in the summer, most people now just stay in

Alicante Fiestas - Trek to Santa Faz

The Pilgrimage to the Holy Visage or face of the "Santa Faz" and it is said to be the second most important pilgrimage that is held in Spain after Andalucia with up to 200,000 people. Pilgrims are dressed up traditional clothing although many people just come along to enjoy the walk to the Monastery of Santa Faz.

Many people even take advantage of a free bus service that will take you direct to Santa Faz as the people from Alicante believe that their lives will be plagued with bad luck due to their general superstitious nature if they don't make the yearly pilgrimage to Santa Faz.

This festival always takes place on the second Thursday after Easter and is celebrated as a local bank holiday so that everyone has the opportunity to walk to Santa Faz, although you still see people walking on the days before and after.

The most serious of walkers will also walk barefoot as a sign of gratitude for any favor that they feel God has been responsible for during the previous year, as it is believed that within the monastery lies the veil with which Veronica dabbed at the bleeding face of Jesus Christ as he carried his cross up Calvary hill.

The majority of people though will be seen having picnic lunches and enjoying the craft markets and fairs that are held at Santa Faz throughout the week, and there are many good spots to have a bite to eat and to try some of the local dishes.

Day Trip to the Island of Tabarca, Alicante

The Island of Tabarca is a quaint place to spend a day relaxing in the sun, while taking in the beautiful surroundings and a tranquility that will complete a perfect day out. Tabarca is just a 30/45 minute ferry ride out to sea from either Alicante or Santa Pola. There is a glass bottom so you can get a really close look at a varied underwater sea life that will whet your appetite for what is to come on the protected Nature and Marine Reserve island of Tabarca.

Take a walk round the tiny island of Tabarca which is only about 1 square KM. You will come across a fortress, a Church, a couple of old fisherman's dwellings, a couple of restaurants and the Trancada Hotel which was Converted from an 18th Century fisherman’s house.

The Trancada hotel is the only hotel on the island of Tabarca and is modernly decorative but has managed to retain the original structure of the building.The hotel has really made a difference to the Tabarca tourism sector and it really sets the seen for a very romantic weekend escape, far away from cars and stress. Towards the end of April begin the famous Moors and Christians fiestas which is in commemoration of the eviction of the Moors from Alicante during the 13th century. All of the locals dress up in costume as either are Christian or a Moor and the street processions are very lively, musical and the fire crackers are never ending.

The most important fiesta celebrated in the city of Alicante is the "Hogueras de San Juan" meaning the burnings of Saint John. This symbolic festival represents the arrival of summer and is when traditionally people light fires on the beach, party, and generally have a memorable night out. In the up run to the festivals you will see huge paper maché figures representing modern day personalities and then on the final night they all get burnt down. This is followed by street parties, live bands and the whole town dancing the night away. The following 6 nights are dedicated to amazing firework displays on the Postiguet beach . The whole deal lasts for about 30 minutes and every night has a different display and the firecrackers set off at the end will leave you with your fingers in your ears. These fiestas are definitely worth a visit as there really is nothing in comparison to the fiestas of San Juan.

Straight after the "Hogueras" comes the fiestas of San Pedro, which is more of a Catholic tradition of celebrating the awakening of the summertime. Once again in great Spanish tradition there will be a lot of fireworks, eating, drinking and dancing all night long as things tend to quiet down here at about 7 in the morning.

As Autumn approaches we are rewarded with a theatre festival, which includes the Alicante International Contemporary Music Festival and is suitable for all ages. The idea of a music festival took off in 1985 and was dedicated to the promotion of mainly Spanish music and musicians, but with the arrival of other cultures here from South America and Africa the whole fiesta has taken on a completely new colorful look.

October and it's the Moors and Christians again but in the surrounding towns of Campello, San Juan and Muchamiel when you can enjoy the gun powder smell in the air once again. This time though you have the whole town enjoying the celebrations together and they are very open to traveling tourists and I recommend that you leave the car at home as their is always plenty of Sangria to help you enjoy these traditional festivities.

Safari Parks in Alicante

There are actually 3 safari parks within close distance of Alicante, so you are spoiled for choice. They all have great access so you will find them with ease.

First of all we have the Vergel Safari Park which is situated near the town of Ondara, which is heading north of Benidorm. The Safari is home to lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, zebras, and loads of different monkeys, and if you are lucky you might see the Iberian wolves that roaming free in the Safari.

You will have to stay in your car throughout most of the Safari but there is a picnic area, where you can walk amongst more domesticated animals like pigs, ponies and cattle. You will also be able to enjoy the dolphin arena, which puts on daily display shows.

If you are looking for a bit more action then you may want to have a go on the go carts, take a ride on the mini train, or take a break in the Kiddies play area, so there really is all round entertainment for the whole family.

You can get to the Safari Park either on the A1 or the N332 and it is pretty well sign posted. The Safari park opens from 10 til 7 in the high season and from 10 til 5 in the winter months.

The Aitana Safari Park is situated in a high mountainous region near Alcoy, where you will be privileged to see lions, tigers, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes. If you fancy eating Al Fresco then there is a beautiful picnic area, otherwise you can enjoy the delights served up in the restaurant, whose specialty are the local dishes of the region.

Benidorm is situated to the northeast of Alicante and is just a 40 minute drive from the Alicante airport. If you don't have your own transport, you can either take a cab or if you can't afford the 50 Euro fare, you could catch the bus into Alicante and then the fast tram to Benidorm and that would work out at about 5 Euro.

Benidorm is very popular with the younger crowd in the high season and in the winter it fills up with lucky pensioners that can enjoy warmer winter climates and some excellent entertainment. I have heard of some pensioners that can afford to live in a hotel for three months on their pension and their winter electricity allowance, but whatever time of year you plan on visiting you will be able to chose from other 100 restaurants and nearly 50 night clubs.

The beaches of "Poniente" and "Levante" are of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca coastline as so much money has been invested in this once small fishing village and whenever Benidorm's beaches are shown on the news here in Spain, you can hardly see the sand, for the amount of people that set up camp on these golden sands. Bird island is just a ten minute boat ride and you will be amazed at the natural beauty that the island beholds and the wildlife is well worth the trip.

Tourists come to Benidorm from all over Europe and you will see Pubs of all European nationalities and the choice for international restaurants is without a doubt the best on the whole of the Costa Blanca region. Benidorm is also popular with Spanish tourists, although I see a few shocked faces sometimes when some waiters can't even understand them. The English language has taken a grip on Benidorm and is not usual in this Valencian district, but thankfully the Benidorm authorities have seen just how important it is to give a quality service to its visitors.

If you are traveling with Kids to Benidorm, well make sure you take them to "Terra Mitica" (Theme Park) and "Aqualandia" (water park) and golfers can also escape to a couple of local golf courses including one at "Terra Mitica". The ideal transport today is the tram that runs up the coast from Alicante to Denia stopping at every one of the seaside villages, where you can enjoy a different Spain away from the fish and chips.

One great night time trip though is a trip to the Alfaz Medieval Castle where you can enjoy and sit down barbecue meal while watching the jousting and other tricks that the knights get up to. A Day Trip to Alicante

Alicante certainly has more then enough to offer visitors during a day trip so this would be my guide to a memorable day in Alicante. If you arrive by car, then head for the centre and follow the signs to "El Corte Ingles" department stores where you will find a handful of underground car parks. The average price is about one Euro per hour, but if you park in the "Corte Inglés" department store car park, a few purchases will get you a good discount.

Once you have parked check out the "Avenida Maisonnave" for clothes and shoes shopping in either the "Corte Inglés" or other well known high street stores and then find time for a bite to eat in one of the many cafes and tapas restaurants that are found in the adjacent streets. At the end of the "Avenida Maisonnave" you will see the "Calvo Sotelo" square, where you can sit and rest and enjoy the sights of the surrounding area. If you should need to visit the British
Consulate during your stay, it is situated in front of the square and close by you will also find "Hacienda" the Inland revenue office, should you need to sort out your fiscal affairs.

Afterwards you should head up the Frederico Soto street towards the "Plaza de los Luceros", which is another beautiful square which has recently be modernised due to the tram which will eventually run underneath up towards the train station. Then walk along the "Alfonso El Sabio" street, which is another important shopping street and at the end of the street you will find the Alicante municipal market and the tram station.

Have a look round the market just to see how things are done here and after that walk down the Rambla towards the sea. The "Rambla" actually means a flood escape which normally handle the rain water that comes into the city from the mountains after heavy rain storms called "La Gota Fria". The "Rambla" was traditionaly a shopping street, but today you are likely to find more restauarants than anything else, but I would suggest the you head up the "Calle Mayor", one of the oldest strrets in Alicante and in the heart of the old town. You will find many well priced restaurants along the Calle Mayor and if you head down one street you find find the town hall as well as another beautiful square and Museum, which highlights ruins of how Alicante used to look like.

From here you can head down towards the "Postiguet" beach, which is just a couple of minutes away and enjoy a walk along the "Esplanada" and make sure you stop for refreshments in one of the terraces that are dotted along the beach front. From there you can head back towards the Alicante harbour, where you will see many luxury yachts moored up and take a look at the harbour's commercial centers that offer a variety of high cuisine restaurants.

If you cross over the road you will be back on the "Esplanada" and you will find a variety of artisan stands that offer some unique hand made items, ideal as souvenirs. One thing to remember is that you should be security conscious in Alicante, especially in tourist areas of the city but just like you would have to in any major tourist town around the world.

At the end of the "Esplanada" you will find the "Doctor Gadea" street which will take you back to the "Avenida Maisonnave and your car. You should by now at least had a good insight into what Alicante has to offer visitors and you may wish to return another day to enjoy the wonders of the historical city of Alicante and the great selection of shops and restaurants that you would have seen during your visit.

Beaches in Alicante

In the heart of the city of Alicante at the base of the "Monte Benacantil" you will find the 900 metre stretch of golden sandy beach known as the "Playa del Postiguet". It is in a easily accessible and unique with lines of palm trees highlighting the beautiful esplanade, full of bars and restaurants. It has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for cleanliness and is used all year round due to the mild winter climate in Alicante, but is particularly busy on Sundays during the summer months.

Take a short stroll along the shoreline to the smaller beach called the "Playa del Coco", where the local fishermen used to land their catches. There is still a small harbour here with some restaurants and cafes where you can sit back and take in the panoramic sea views.

To the north of the Alicante is situated a beach called "Playa de la Albufereta" which takes its name from the small coastal lake that used to be here with a harbour that served the Roman village of Lucentum. This beach leads on to the Playa de la Almadraba which is a small sandy beach and is the perfect place for water sports enthusiasts or swimmers.

The "Cabo de las Huertas" beach is ideal for those who want to explore a more rugged coastline with picturesque coves that are difficult to access, just adding to it's remoteness. If you want to develop that all over tan then the two nudist coves of "Cala Palmera" and "Cala Cantelalares" are great places for you, but make sure you use a high factor sun screen.

The "Playa San Juan" beach and the "El Campello" beach are a bit further north along the coast (about 25 minutes from the city). El Campello is a lovely town with bars and restaurants spilling out on to a lovely promenade that runs alongside a stretch of golden sands. Both have gently sloping shores that are perfectly safe for children and a marina where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch.

The course is not too long, and is well adapted to the natural surroundings and terrain. It is a varied course, although the fact that it is located in the lowest part of a valley means it is not very undulating.

There is Mediterranean vegetation in abundance as well as thick woods, although they rarely come into play. The greens are not too small and each hole is completely different. The difficulty of this course lies in having to avoid a natural precipice and several water hazards on some holes.

The Don Cayo golf club was founded in 1974 by Don Luis Campomanes Asumendi as part of the "El Aramo" residential development project, situated in the foothills of the Sierra Bernia mountain range. It is located in the municipal limits of Altea, a Mediterranean village famous for the beauty of its historic quarter and the distinctive natural light.

With a round of 3,078 metres from the white tees, extremely difficult holes - such as the 5th, a 580-metre par-5, or the 6th, a slightly uphill 227-metre par-3 – alternate with recovery holes which also require accuracy if you want to land the ball on the fairway. Players tend to prefer the 3rd, with its views of the sea, and the 7th from where you can make out the mountains surrounding the Marina Baixa.

Situated 90 kilometres from Alicante on the way to Valencia, and sheltered from the wind by Cape San Antonio, the course has a perfect micro climate all the year round, and is located in a wonderful natural setting, surrounded by pine woods. The round is very attractive, with gentle slopes, excellently maintained greens, and wide fairways flanked by pine trees and orange trees.

Club de Golf La Sella
Located on the slopes of a mountain, the La Sella Golf Club is not a particularly tiring course. It lies next to Montgó natural park, and is surrounded by Mediterranean woodland and hills. Pine trees, orange trees, olives and almonds add colour to the course and, although they are pretty to look at, will cause big problems for less accurate players.

The course has 18 holes and a par of 72. It is varied and thought provoking, and moderate in length and, if you know how to use all of your clubs, you will be able to get a good result. The design of the courses means it is suitable for players of all levels, with the difficulty apparent at the tees. The designer, with the expert help of José María Olazábal, designed the course in such a way that if you miss the green, you will need all the virtuosity of the Spanish Champion to save the par.

Casa Museo La Asegurada ("Casa de la Asegurada" Museum)
The Museum sits at the foot of the castle of Santa Barbara, and exhibits important works by both 20th-century Spanish and foreign artists.

The building which houses the Museum was originally used as a granary, then as a prison, school,Library and currently, the home to one of the most interesting collections of 20th-century art.

The collection on the whole was a donated by the artist Eusebio Sempere to the city of Alicante and the collection is composed of works by Spanish creators from the 1950's, such as Chillida, Millares, Mompo, Saura, Tàpies and Zobel. The collection was later completed with works by Salvador Dali, Picasso, Juan Gris and the so-called "Equipo Crónica". On the second floor you can contemplate works by foreign artists as important as Braque, Vasarely, Kandinsky and Max Ernst.

Church of San Pedro
Rebuilt after an earthquake, the Church of San Juan unites baroque features with the beginnings of what would become neoclassicism.

It is on the site of a mosque which was converted into a church. It was built in the 15th century although the current temple dates back to the 19th century. This new temple was built according to the baroque style in the course of transition to the Neoclassical. The highlight of its artistic heritage are the figures by Alonso Cano and Salzillo and a fresco which is found in the High Altar that represents the Dogma of the Immaculate Virgin.

The Alicante Golf course is situated in a coastal region of Alicante called La Playa San Juan. Alicante golf is a par 72 golf course, designed by Severiano_Ballesteros. This golf course was part of an Alicante Urbanization project that included housing, schools, shopping centers, hotels, a sports complex and a new fire station is next on the list.

The Alicante Golf course is made up of an area of 535.000 m2. It is 6.270 meters long with 3.125 meters on the front nine and the rest on the back nine. Severiano Ballesteros considered the course to be very attractive with a high degree of variation. There are large tee areas and quite wide fairways, with five large lakes and some archaeological remains which make it quite a testing course to play on.

Alicante Golf is situated just five minutes from the Mediterranean sea and is an ideal golf and beach holiday destination. The golf course was first opened in 1988 and is one of the few courses that can boast of having 6 par 3s, 6 par 4s and 6 par 5s. There are refreshments available as well as a well priced restaurant inside the clubhouse. The full golfing etiquette applies at Alicante Golf so make sure that you aren't wearing jeans or you won't be able to play.

Accommodation for playing at Alicante Golf is varied as you can choose from a whole range of hotels although the closest is the Hesperia hotel which has 5 stars and they will assist you with tee times. Make sure you take a day off golf to go and visit Alicante, which has a very impressive harbour area and plenty of restaurants and bars to help you relax and take in the marvels of Alicante.

Just a short tram trip from Alicante Golf you will find the modern fishing village of El Campello, that you will find to be the perfect place for spending the day on one of the many beach side bars where you can soak up the sun in a relaxing style.

Playa San Juan - The Perfect Beach

The Golden sands that stretch from Playa San Juan to El Campello are probably the cleanest and the best kept throughout Europe. The beach town of Playa San Juan has become one of Europe's summertime hot spots with an almost 4 month long summer which turns the town into a Fiesta of activity.

There are two 5 star hotels but each with their own specialty. The Sidi San Juan hotel is situated close to the beach and is in the heart of the town, whereby The Hesperia hotel is located on the Alicante golf course which is about 1 km inland. If 5 star is not strictly you then there is a wide range accommodation to suit everybody´s needs.

There are a whole string of restaurants along the Playa San Juan beach front that will basically serve you a Mediterranean style meal. I would recommend the mixed salad, fish Paella and Sangria and make sure you ask for "Ali Oli", which is a mayonnaise garlic sauce. It is great on bread as well as on the rice Paella. I would say that a meal of this type would cost about €20 a head.

When you have finished your meal you can take a stroll along the promenade that is lined with palm trees. There is no access for cars now, so you can really have a relaxing walk and admire those golden sands and the blue Mediterranean sea without having to avoid cars. One street back is about to be connected to the tram line, so you could get over to Alicante Golf in no time, which will also be on the line shortly.

Alicante Golf - The Surrounding Golf Courses

Although Alicante Golf is a really high standard course where every minor detail can be taken care of, there are several other courses in the surrounding area of Alicante Golf of similar standard. This allows you to have a choice of top golf courses to play on so there's no need to get into a golfing routine.

There is no problem to pre book on any of the other golf courses as all of the Caddy Masters speak English here. You can make a reservation by phone or email and your tee off time will be confirmed. You can either take a taxi or if you have a hire car you will be given the necessary instructions on how to arrive to the golf course.

On the whole the courses are quite full in the mornings as there are a lot of local golfing societies, so I would recommend teeing off as late as possible or as early as possible if you can. Don't even think about peak hours as these courses are all pretty well played on. The maintenance here though is excellent and you can see why some people complain why golf courses use too much of the local water supply.
